這是黑人盲歌星史提夫汪德為電影" 紅衣女郎 "( The Woman In Red )所寫的歌曲，也是他最為人熟知的一首作品。不過您若認為這首輕鬆寫意的歌曲就代表他的個人風格，那您可能小看他了。

　史提夫汪德生於１９５０年，出生時即兩眼全盲。不過，上天賜予他極佳的音感與創作才能，十二歲時就被唱片公司發掘，隨即推出專輯唱片，震驚了美國歌壇，被譽為黑人音樂界的音樂神童。７０年代的史提夫汪德，逐漸進入創作成熟期，不僅專輯暢銷，而且都獲得相當高的評價，" Talking Book "、" Innervisions "等後來都入選為流行音樂史上最重要的一百張專輯。如今，他在美國是地位相當崇高的大師級人物。

今天，大概沒人會否認《萬花嬉春》（Singin' in the Rain,1952）是影史最偉大的歌舞片。
它不僅屢次被聲譽卓著的英國「視與聽」（Sight and Sound）雜誌選為影史十大影片，而且是有史以來唯一被選入的歌舞片；即使是形象端正的勞勃瑞福（Robert Redford）在《法網神鷹》這部電影，看到電視播出《萬花嬉春》時，也忍不住跟著旋律、拿著雨傘，表演他不太發達卻難得一見的歌舞細胞；而米亞法羅（Mia Farrow）和伍迪艾倫（Woody Allen）尚未分手前，也在《愛與罪》（Crime and Misdemeanors,1989）演出一段甜蜜的情事，那就是叫外賣、然後躲在剪接室裡，邊吃邊看《萬花嬉春》；就連三大男高音在美國聚頭演唱的時候，都不忘唱首《萬花嬉春》的主題曲「致敬」一下；還有不知道多少廣告都用過這部電影的歌來推銷產品（衛生用品和餅乾廣告尤其愛用）。這些實例，不辯自明地為《萬花嬉春》的魅力下了註腳：它是那麼地優雅、甜美、風趣而有感染力，才能讓這麼多不同領域的人員交集在當中。
不過我們還是要介紹一下影片的端倪。
《萬花嬉春》的緣起是米高梅製片亞瑟佛雷（Arthur Freed）想把一些舊歌「再生利用」，於是要求旗下兩位編劇搭檔貝蒂柯丹（Betty Comden）、阿多夫葛林（Adolph Green）把它們串成一個故事，並獲得金凱利（Gene Kelly）同意演出，由於這些歌曲大多作於二０年代末到三０年代，於是他們便想乾脆以好萊塢無聲片過渡到有聲片這段時間為背景，讓金凱利飾演一個從雜耍藝人、替身演員好不容易爬到大明星位置的男主角，受到瘋狂影迷愛戴的同時，也深為他在銀幕上的搭檔--一個嬌縱而沒大腦的女明星（珍哈根Jean Hagen飾演）--不斷的騷擾所苦。真正吸引他的是黛比雷諾（Debbie Reynolds）所飾演的小演員，她鄙棄默片的千篇一律，但為了生活又不得不在好萊塢打滾。
歌舞片情節跟娛樂事業扯上關係，並沒有什麼稀奇。但是像《萬花嬉春》這樣保持高度辯證性又不破壞類型精神的，還真是鳳毛麟角。電影一開始，就是一場首映會，金凱利在中國戲院門口跟萬千影迷表達謝意以外，還訴說了自己與好友唐納奧康諾（Donald O'Connor）的成長歷程，有趣的是他嘴裡所說的「從小接受良好音樂教育，觀眾都熱愛我們的表演，一進電影圈就得到如今跟他搭檔的女明星拉拔.....」等等美好的生涯回顧，竟跟影像所呈現的背道而馳，真實是「他和死黨從未接受正統藝術教育，只能在小劇院裡作各種表演餬口，觀眾非但不鼓勵他們，還時常惡劣地趕他們下台，美麗的女明星也從未笑容可掬地提拔他，要不是老闆決定捧這個在每部片子演龍套演到搶戲的小伙子當男主角，女明星甩都不甩他呢......」。
畫外音與畫面之間的扞挌，一方面直指好萊塢明星神話背後的現實真相，另一方面也玩了一次音畫反著對位的遊戲，既有趣又曖昧，也建立起本片的基調。
譬如女主角黛比雷諾初識男主角金凱利時，一副義正辭嚴地批評電影表演根本毫無演技可言，電影明星不能算是演員；但是當他跟凱利墜入情網的剎那，她卻忍不住招供其實自己也看過好幾本明星雜誌。她的批評，確實指出了電影表演要定位或評價的困難，因為電影表演往往不像舞臺上有連慣性與主體性，還必須受場面調度及剪接的影響和牽連。但電影明星的魅力不也在這些周邊因素的配合下，才得以完成的嗎？因為是電影，他才能只要在攝影機前表演，就讓全世界的人都看到；因為是電影，主演者的形象才會和影迷崇拜結合得那麼緊。你幾乎難以想像一部歌舞片怎麼會去碰觸高達（Jean-Luc Godard）或電影論文才討論的問題，但《萬花嬉春》卻在舉重若輕間，就把這碩大的命題融會了，又絲毫不肯荒廢歌舞的靈丹妙用。
譬如當金凱利幾乎喪失自信地問他的死黨唐納奧康諾自己是不是「千篇一律」時，奧康諾可不是板起臉孔說道理，而是身體力行地邊說邊唱，還外帶特技般的舞蹈，表演了一曲「逗人歡笑」（Make 'Em Laugh）。這段歌舞言簡意賅地表達了電影吸引大眾的正面意義在其「娛樂」，但娛樂卻非廉價低俗的賣弄，而是努力加才華所換來的。唐納奧康諾不僅嘴裡唱著要逗人家歡笑，他自己的表演就是「逗人歡笑」的最佳註腳，一下跟假人跳貼面舞兼演默劇，一下跟攝影棚裡所有沒生命的道具演對手戲，每一格底片裡的精彩娛樂，無不是他的努力和天才所造就的。這樣的身體力行，比所有說教都還要有說服力。其實，電影藝術從未鄙棄過跟娛樂同在，但是相較於《萬花嬉春》的認真，現在愈來愈多人用低俗玷污娛樂，連帶藝術也變得霧裡看花，朦朦朧朧了。
片中，金凱利跟黛比雷諾經歷了不少誤會，才成就一段愛情，但凱利的電影事業卻因為有聲時代的來臨，而遇上瓶頸。雖然電影公司從善如流地儘速安排他跟銀幕搭檔主演有聲電影，但技術上的粗糙加上搭檔那副令人不管恭維的嗓子，新片首映，就立即宣告失敗。這部份相當於一段影史的重塑與再現，好萊塢有聲片的來臨，揭露了不少銀幕偶像的聲帶跟他們長相所與人的浪漫不符，而加速了改朝換代。而有聲片剛開始的時候，為了解決攝影機隆隆的噪音，被迫將攝影機關在隔音亭裡拍攝，因為隔音亭的空間有限，既侷限了攝影機運動的可能，也逼使演員不能有太大的動作，只能圍在主道具四周轉圈圈。等到電影拍完要放映時，又因為有聲片初期還沒有將聲音直接印在底片上的技術，以致一邊放還得一邊控制聲音跟影像的秩序，一亂就完蛋了。《萬花嬉春》輕輕帶過，就把這段電影工業史詮釋得趣味盎然。
但問題還沒解決啊！回到家裡，金凱利幾乎要先替自己的電影事業宣告死刑了，但是黛比雷諾、唐納奧康諾，一個愛人、一個摯友，卻幫他想了一個好點子：何不將電影改成歌舞片呢？只是那位糟糕的女明星，連話都說不好了，要她怎麼唱歌呢？
黛比雷諾到底是男主角可愛的女友，就在這時挺身而出，自願幫那個老是纏著他男友不放的蠢女星代唱一次，以免凱利遭她拖累，然後大家一塊瞞住蠢女星，於是一切問題都解決了。三個人在這場戲合唱了一首茱蒂嘉蘭（Judy Garland）在《娃娃從軍記》（Babes in Arms'1939）也唱過的「早安」（Good Morning），有趣的是三個人一邊唱，還各拿一件雨衣當道具，分別跳出三種完全不同風味的舞蹈，為什麼歌舞片的類型精神裡會包含了「天才、樂觀」，這應該是一個很好的註腳。
諷刺的是，最近我才從一本書上知道，在片中飾演幫人家幕後配音代唱的黛比雷諾，其實在這部電影的聲音，也是人家幫她配的。原來公司擔心他當時還未改掉的德州口音太重，所以另外找了一個叫做貝蒂蘿西（Betty Royce）的人，幫黛比雷諾重配對白。這種事原本沒什麼好大驚小怪，但擺在這部電影，卻變得分外諷刺。
難關解決以後，金凱利非常gentleman地送黛比雷諾回家，一個goodbye kiss之後，他要計程車自己先走，他一個人決定在下雨的街道上，散個步，然後唱起了跟本片原文同名的主題曲「雨中歡唱」（Singin' in the Rain）：I'm singin' in the rain, I'm singin' in the rain......，唱著唱著，凱利忘情地躍上燈柱，向未來展開他強壯的手臂擁抱希望；地上的積水，屋簷上流下的雨水，不但沒礙著他，反而成為他舞蹈裡的活動道具。他快樂極了，收起雨傘，看到櫥窗裡南海女郎的畫報，他還把傘當琴彈似地忘記現實裡的大雨。當他拖著傘在大馬路上瘋狂地繞圈時，我們看到了快樂的意志如何改變了整個銀幕的世界。直到一個煞風景的警察走進他，他才悠悠唱出最後一句歌詞：I'm dancin' and singin' in the rain.驕傲地向警察說著：「我只不過是快樂地在雨中又唱又跳。」當一個沒帶傘的路人經過，金凱利還把傘送給他，至於凱利自己，根本就不需要了。在此之後，儘管心腸惡毒的女明星想用合約讓黛比雷諾一輩子在幕後為她代唱，但輕而易舉地就被金凱利給化解了。畢竟他早已經用一首歌曲改變了世界，還有什麼能難倒他呢？
「Singin' in the Rain」這段同名歌舞，堪稱影史之最，不在其難度，而是從沒有一部電影（不只是歌舞片）可以把「快樂」表現得這麼有創意。歌舞片所追求外在看來超離現實但感情必須平實深刻的最高境界，就在這首歌曲當中實現了。同時身兼導演、編舞，還主演、主唱的金凱利，也證明了他是比佛雷亞斯坦（Fred Astiar）更具「整合」觀念的「第二代舞王」。
就像這部電影可以把別人以前用過的「Good Morning」詮釋出全新的意義，「Singin' in the Rain」其實也不是原創曲目。這首歌最早出現在1929年的《Hollywood Revue of 1929》，由克里夫愛德華斯（Cliff Edwards）領銜主唱。吉米杜朗頓（Jimmy Durante）也在1932年的《Sprak Easily》唱過，連茱蒂嘉蘭都曾經在《Little Nellie Kelly》演唱過同一首歌曲。為什麼現在大家只記得金凱利在雨中揮著雨傘獨唱這首歌的場面呢？這說明了電影歌曲的意義和價值，往往超出單曲本身，而和影片的場面調度互相影響。這也是我在前面強調金凱利的多重身份的原因，因為他不僅是一個會演會唱的明星，他在導演與編舞工作上的介入，更幫助了歌舞意義的提昇。
《萬花嬉春》只是他眾多傑作裡的一部，卻也是最好的一部。
曾經有人辦過一個「荒島電影」的票選，如果有一天你流落荒島，只能重複地看一部電影，你會選哪部？《萬花嬉春》高票當選。很有道理嘛！你想想，早晨起來，跟金凱利、黛比雷諾、唐納奧康諾一塊唱「Good Morning」，下雨了，還能一起「Singin' in the Rain」。不但能看電影、學唱歌、學跳舞（金凱利幾乎在本片搬出十八般武藝：踢踏、爵士、芭蕾...，應有盡有），整部電影的樂觀氛圍，更不會讓你在作困愁城之際，還雪上加霜。誰能不愛它呢？

　" California dreaming 加州之夢 "這首歌大家應該相當熟悉，它是最能代表 60 年代的歌曲之一，儘管當年它在美國最高名次為第四名，在英國只有第九名，卻無損它在時間洪流中的經典地位。

　演唱團體" The Mamas & The Papas 雙親合唱團 "由兩對夫妻組成，這首歌的詞曲作者乃是其中的一對：約翰和蜜雪兒菲利浦。組團之初兩人才新婚不久，暫居紐約。有一天深夜，約翰把蜜雪兒搖醒，邀她一起到公寓外面散步，尋找寫歌靈感，累極了的蜜雪兒原本不要，禁不起先生誘之以並列為歌曲作者，她才勉強答應。時值冬天，那一年紐約的冬天又特別的冷，對於在溫暖明媚的加州長大的蜜雪兒菲利浦而言，一時思鄉情濃，完成了第一段歌詞。由於蜜雪兒平日喜歡參觀教堂，前一陣子兩人才去過聖派屈克教堂，因此啟發了她寫第二段歌詞的靈感。
　雙親合唱團組成於 1964 年，他們的好友 Barry McGuire 巴瑞麥奎爾是位小有名氣的歌手，幫他們爭取到了一紙唱片合約。未發片以前，約翰菲利浦將" California dreaming "交給了這位好友演唱，做為巴瑞麥奎爾單曲唱片" Eve of destruction 毀滅前夕 "之後的下一首單曲，四位團員則暫時充當巴瑞麥奎爾的幕後和聲。

　巴瑞麥奎爾的主聲錄完之後，雙親合唱團接著錄和聲，錄完後一聽：" All the leaves are brown and the sky was grey........ "，在場的每個人都覺得效果出奇的好，約翰菲利浦立刻詢問巴瑞麥奎爾可否將這首歌收回，當作雙親合唱團的第一首單曲，巴瑞麥奎爾回答：「歌是你寫的，隨你處置。」唱片公司也欣然同意。於是，巴瑞麥奎爾的主聲被抽掉，由另一位男團員 Denny Doherty 重唱主聲，並在間奏中加入一段長笛獨奏，完成了我們現今聽到的版本，後來也成為雙親合唱團眾多暢銷曲中最膾炙人口的一首歌。
